MMA&A NEWS: MAY - JUNE 2008

Industry Insight

It's Media Makeup's 10th anniversary this year and Tammy Mallyon, Media Makeup director/Beauty Association board member, says she has seen significant changes to the hair and make up industries since the dawn of the successful Adelaide-based company.

Increased promotion and public exposure has created a healthier image of the industry overall, says Tammy, and its profile is still lifting as the areas of hair, makeup and beauty become more integrated.

For makeup artists this means an increased opportunity to up-skill and crossover into other areas - expanding employment options and career paths.

The efforts of the SA Hair & Beauty Industry Association have led to greater awareness of industry needs in general and a more targeted approach to training, says Tammy. Meanwhile, the number of makeup competitions at professional and student level has multiplied, providing more exposure for home-grown talent.

Hair and Beauty Expo

The much anticipated Hair and Beauty Expo, held at the Adelaide Convention Centre on May 4th and 5th, featured seminars, competitions and the latest industry innovations.

A number of past and present Media Makeup students took part in body painting competitions, providing a great way to showcase their artistic talents. First prize went to Renee Brice (current Advanced Diploma Student) and Rachel Pargeter (past Advanced Diploma Student). Congratulations girls.

Meanwhile the Media Makeup stand was packed with a photographic gallery of professional headshots, a virtual tour of the academy and special discounts on Makeup Forever products. Media Makeup students were busy all day on the Monday as they gave free airbrush tattoos to queues of enthusiastic high school students.

Many thanks to two drag queens, who did an absolutely fantastic job of directing event goers over to the stand by strutting around and giving out flyers!

More competitions coming up

Sunday July 20th is a date to mark in the calendar as hair and makeup competitions get underway at the Adelaide Hilton. This huge event will include runway and bridal competitions and is a fabulous chance for entrants to promote themselves to the industry and gain employment on weddings and fashion shows. Tammy Mallyon, who will be on the judging panel, says she is looking forward to seeing SA's best on show.

Course Changes 2009

In 2009, we'll be implementing a few changes to our Certificate III course in line with industry demands. More fashion styling and design training, including graphic and photographic imaging, will be built into the course to give students the option of moving into these areas. This emphasis will also mean students finish their training armed with amazing portfolios of their work.

Industry in the classroom

Inglot Cosmetics have recently been utilising Media Makeup's fantastic boardroom for in-house training nights. This is a great way for students and industry to mix and reflects Media Makeup's integrated focus on industry and training.

In the field

Congratulations to three of our students who have been hired by the new Mac store in David Jones. Go and check out the store's state-of-the-art fittings, which has been followed by the Body Shop's refurbishment and DJ's revamp of its cosmetics floor.
