A special message from Heather Wisner, Managing Editor of the Makeup Artist Magazine

Hi, everyone: I'd like to welcome you to the 2009 International Make-Up Artist Trade Show, held June 20-21 at the Pasadena Convention Center.

We will have two exciting themes for our student make-up competition this year: Gothic (beauty make-up) and X-Men Mutants (character make-up). Please note that the emphasis in the beauty competition is on a beautiful gothic make-up rather than a scary one. View more details and download an entry form.

Please be sure to read the official competition rules while you are there.

If you're planning to enter the student competition, you must be enrolled in or have graduated from a recognized make-up school within the last 12 months. You must also send us 10 non-returnable photos of your work, although these don’t have to represent this year's themes. Finally, you MUST fully complete and submit the entry form NO LATER THAN May 22, 2009, along with your photos. Entrants who do not meet these qualifications will not be considered.

Send forms and photos to my attention at Make-Up Artist magazine, 4018 NE 112th Ave., Suite D-8, Vancouver, Washington, USA 98682. And be sure to take advantage of our student discount when you purchase your IMATS tickets. To learn more about the show itself, visit www.makeupartistshow.com.

Good luck to all. We're looking forward to seeing your work!

Best regards,

The Decayed

Our Advanced Diploma students who graduated last year attended the premier viewing of the film "The Decayed".

Under Bec Cochrane's supervision as Training Director, they created some amazing effects and prosthetics with professionalism and great team work with the rest of the amazing crew.

We congratulate them on such detailed and effective characterisation.

Adelaide Fringe

As you know the Adelaide Fringe attracts talent and artists world wide to demonstrate their extra ordinary acts and amazing talent.

This year some of our very own past students and trainers set up a stand in the Old Adelaide Gaol and did they attract interested onlookers!!

There was body art, prosthetic pieces (including a jar of babies feet, not real of course), special effects and recreated baby dolls that look so realistic you could adopt one.

The work and effects were so impressive that our trainers and students received bookings and commissioned work from the Fringe display.

Correspondence from past students

Every so often we receive correspondence from past students and artists who travel different parts of the world and here is a lovely email from Jess Bailey who recently travelled to Ireland.

Hi Tammy,

Just wanted to touch base and fill you in on my travels!!

Well, I have been in Dublin for nearly 3 weeks now. It's freezing and not quite the 40 degrees you are getting at home! My job interview went really well with the makeup academy and I sat in on classes all last week. Thanks for your tips! They seemed to be very impressed with my standards and have shown everyone my portfolio!

I am now freelancing for them and taught my first class on Monday night. It went really well. The group I took was their module 3 part time students, so they come every Monday and Tuesday night from 6:30pm til 9pm for 4 months. The class I taught was bridal makeup and the students loved it. Already I can see differences in some of our techniques compared to those in Europe! I have also been taking one on one lessons for them, and on Monday morning I did makeup for a morning TV show called Ireland AM. There was actually a quick snippet of me doing makeup on TV!!!

The Makeup Academy is lovely, reminds me a lot of Media actually with very high standards and very professional. The decor and facilities are exceptional! They offer modules 1, 2 and 3. Module 1 goes for 1 week, Module 2 goes for 2 weeks and Module 3 goes for 2 months. Modules 2 and 3 can be completed part time as well. They also have a wedding Agency and are involved with a lot of events within the industry. I think I have gotten into an extremely reputable company!

It was funny, the other day I was in a class and I was chatting with one of the students. I told her I was from Adelaide and had studied and worked with Media Makeup Academy. Her jaw dropped, apparently she has been sending you emails as she wants to do the advanced diploma but cannot yet as an international student. She thinks I am soo lucky for having studied with you, I think I was too!

Anyway I must go, hope everything is going well back home and it's not too hot!!!

Keep in touch

Jess
